SoC for Jan. 30 - Feb. 5

Reason's Energy Seeks to Penetrate the Unknown

I am a part of all that I have met;
Yet all experience is an arch wherethrough
Gleams that untraveled world whose margin fades
Forever and forever when I move.
- Alfred, Lord Tennyson (Ulysses)

This week we'll read Chapter 14 of The Religious Sense. I invite you to read this piece closely, attentively. This week can be filled with Ulysses' tension toward the Unknown, if we allow ourselves to follow the signs that are given!
We'll meet at 5:15pm on Sunday in Maria Goretti.

Jerome Lejeune Presentation

Also,

A dear friend, Ombretta Salvucci, is coming from DC to Miami on the weekend of February 26th. She will be here at Ave Maria on Saturday, February 25th and will present part of an exhibit on the French geneticist and close friend of JPII, Jerome Lejeune. Flyers will be coming out soon, but you should be warned...stay alert!

Study Weekend

Saturday, February 18th - Sunday, Feb. 19th

Jose Pedrin has proposed that we have a study weekend together with our CLU friends from Miami. Seeing as studying is the way we spend most of our time, it's important to come together to help each other and to understand what (if anything) our companionship has to do with any of this work we have to do all the time. I'm very excited, because it can be a great opportunity to verify what happened when we went to see Fr. Carron in Miami: who are these people for my life, truly?
We need to find out if that weekend is good, if people will be here. Please email me or comment on this post to let me know as soon as possible!
The plan is to spend Saturday studying together and the Miamites will stay the night here, leaving after breakfast on Sunday.
I hope to hear from you all soon, and to defeat you in Dorm Wars tomorrow!

O, Freedom!!

This week SoC is Chapter 13 of The Religious Sense: An Education in Freedom

Don Giussani outlines our journey to freedom with these points:
1. in order to be educated to freedom - the ability to adhere to being - we must be educated in attentiveness and acceptance.
2. we, by nature, expect things and our expectation becomes asking, searching: "Thus, if reality provokes us, then an education in freedom must teach one to respond to pro-vocation. It is an education in 'hungering' and 'thirsting' which makes us attentive to the many solicitations emerging from our confrontation with the totality of the real, ready to accept any valuable aspect, that is, any serious promise to the essential need of our being." (pg. 126)
3. "The inevitable consequence of a relationship with God, mediated by the phenomenon of the sign, is what I call the experience of risk [..] The more something involves the meaning of living, the more we fear affirming it [...] Only the communal dimension renders the human being sufficiently capable of overcoming the experience of risk" (pg. 130).

What are the things that I perceive as pro-vocations ("to call to" ...as we all know!:)? How do I respond to these things? Is what Giussani claims about the necessity of community true? How do I know?

School of Community is... at the moment uncertain because of Dorm Wars. Time and place to be posted soon!

Listen to this song, if you get the chance. We'll be singing it!!
The first version is very beautiful, but the second is sung soulfully, and I couldn't resist.

School of Community

January 22nd
5:15pm
Maria Goretti Lobby

Readings: Chapter 10 of The Religious Sense
"It is this awe which awakens the ultimate question within us: not as a cold observation, but as a wonder pregnant with attraction, almost a passivity in which simultaneously is conceived an attraction." (pg. 101)
What is your experience of this awe which opens you? In front of our trip to Miami, in front of your school work in these days, in front of your friends? And, because it is helpful for us all when we come prepared, come having thought about your experience, come with a judgement!

Here's a song we'll sing: listen to it if you can!
